How to Get a Medical Cannabis Card in Ohio

How to qualify, apply, and use an Ohio medical marijuana card — plus the patient benefits.

What is a Medical Marijuana Card?

Medical marijuana cards are state-issued permits for residents that classify them as eligible patients if they have a qualifying condition.

How Do I Qualify?

The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program (MMCP) recognizes the following qualifying conditions:

  • AIDS

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

  • Alzheimer's disease

  • Cachexia

  • Cancer

  • Chronic traumatic encephalopathy

  • Crohn's disease

  • Epilepsy or another seizure disorder

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Glaucoma

  • Hepatitis C

  • Huntington's disease

  • Inflammatory bowel disease

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Pain that is either chronic and severe or intractable

  • Parkinson's disease

  • Positive status for HIV

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Sickle cell anemia

  • Spasticity

  • Spinal cord disease or injury

  • Terminal illness

  • Tourette syndrome

  • Traumatic brain injury

  • Ulcerative colitis

How Do I Apply for a Medical Marijuana Card?

Step 1: Visit a Certified Physician

Establish a relationship with a physician who holds an active Certificate to Recommend (CTR) from the State Medical Board of Ohio. An in-person or telemedicine visit is required at least once per year. Use the CTR Physician Search to find a certified doctor. If approved, the physician will create your profile in the Patient & Caregiver Registry.

Step 2: Complete Registration & Pay the Fee

After your physician creates your profile, you'll receive an email to log in to the Ohio Patient Registry. Complete your application and pay the registration fee.

Step 3: Find a Dispensary

Once you receive your Patient & Caregiver Registry card, you may purchase medical marijuana from a licensed Ohio dispensary. View the Map of Ohio Medical Marijuana Dispensaries for locations near you.

Are There Any Age Limitations?

Applicants must be 18 years or older. Minors may also qualify but require a parent or legal guardian to act as a caregiver.

What Doctors Should I Contact?

A physician must be certified with the State Medical Board of Ohio to recommend medical cannabis. Find one using the CTR Physician Search.
